Atlas of Immune Cells in Renal Cancer

Researchers from the University of Zurich have individually analyzed millions of immune cells in tumor samples from patients with renal cell carcinoma. They are now presenting an immunological atlas of the tumor environment for the first time, leading to possible further developments of immunotherapies (Image: Karina Silina, UZH). This research was supported by the SystemsX.ch Transfer Project (TF) Foes or Friends? and the SystemsX.ch Medical Research and Development Project (MRD) MetastasiX.

How to color a lizard: from biology to mathematics

Researchers at the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics report in the journal Nature that a southwestern European lizard slowly acquires its intricate adult skin colour by changing the colour of individual skin scales using an esoteric computational system invented in 1948 by the mathematician John von Neumann. Film about SystemsX.ch

Over the years of the SystemsX.ch initiative, a great many interesting projects have been carried out. SystemsX.ch has decided to produce a documentary film to chronicle this wealth of research, which will be premiered at the 3rd International SystemsX.ch Conference in Zurich in September. Eavan Dorcey is overseeing the film project, in which a handful of very diverse projects will be portrayed, giving an overview of the Swiss Initiative in Systems Biology. The one hour long film, written by the science journalist Barbara Gallavotti, is being filmed at several institutions.
