Scattered light fluorescence microscopy: imaging through turbid layers

Zurich, 27.04.2010. The fluorescence microscope is a vital tool in virtually any biological, medical or biophysical laboratory. As with any microscope, a major limitation of the fluorescence microscope is its penetration depth into turbid tissue. Researchers of the University of Zurich (SystemsX.ch project WingX), have taken an important step to solve this problem.

Testosterone does not induce aggression

Zürich, 09.12.2009. New scientific evidence refutes the preconception that testosterone causes aggressive, egocentric, and risky behavior. A study at the Universities of Zurich and Royal Holloway London with more than 120 experimental subjects has shown that the sexual hormone with the poor reputation can encourage fair behaviors if this serves to ensure one’s own status.

PDF

2009 RTD decision: Six new SystemsX.ch Projects approved

Zürich, 20.05.2009. SystemsX.ch, the Swiss Initiative in Systems Biology, supports six further large Research, Technology and Development (RTD) Projects. In the second call for proposals, projects focus on either the development of new technologies or on the interface between biomedical research and genomics. The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) approved six RTD-projects today. They will engage a total of 47 research groups from both Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology (ETH Zurich und EPF Lausanne), as well as from the Universities of Basel, Lausanne, Geneva and Zurich. How to survive oxygen depletion

Zürich/Geneva, 17.04.2009. thm. Howard Riezmann and Jean-Claude Martinou from the University of Geneva showed, how animals protect themselves against oxygen depletion (anoxia). The scientists, both supported by SystemsX.ch, describe the mechanism from the gene level up to the protecting lipids with the help of lipidomics. The paper, published on April 17th in «Science» shows, how this young technology helps to understand fundamental processes in cells.
