Charles Kleiber, State Secretary for Education and Research, Ruedi Aebersold, Chairman of the Scientific Executive Board of SystemsX.ch and Ralph Eichler, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SystemsX.ch explained what SystemsX.ch is all about. NOTE: IPhDs are funded for a 3 year time frame i.e. a total of ~156 kCHF/ project or student

100 Mio Swiss Francs for SystemsX.ch
Bern/Zürich. 20.09.2007. AK/VDM. Now it is official: Federal supports SystemsX.ch with CHF 100 Mio for the period 2008-2011, ETH Zurich receives another CHF 100 Mio for D-BSSE in Basel. Yesterday and today, the National Council debated on the Federal message about Education, Research and Innovation for the next four years proposed by the Federal Council on January 24, 2007. It was debated in the Council of States on June 19, 2007. All parts concerning SystemsX.ch and D-BSSE were accepted by both Chambers. Annual tranches might incur sporadic cuttings. However, the Swiss Initiative in Systems Biology will be implemented as intended. The Swiss parliament decided to increase federal funds in Education, Research and Innovation annually by 6% respective to the level of 2007. Some minor difference between the two Chambers, which don’t affect SystemsX.ch, will be resolved next Monday.
Hence, SystemsX.ch is ready to operate. The contract was signed on September 6, 2007, the first Call for Proposals is published, and with today, the funding was approved for a four year period.
All-SystemsX.ch-Day on September 17, 2007
Zurich. 19.09.2007. AK. The All-SystemsX.ch-Day of September 17, 2007 was a success. About 250 persons showed interest and attended the event at EPF Lausanne. More than 25 posters visualized SystemsX research projects. In the afternoon, 14 ideas for RTD projects were presented to the audience. Find more information here.
SystemsX.ch has been launched
Zurich. 10.09.2007. AK. SystemsX.ch has officially been launched on September 06, 2007 in Berne. A Kick-off meeting was organized by the State Secretary of Education and Research, Charles Kleiber. The SystemsX.ch Board of Directors met to sign the jointly elaborated SystemsX.ch contract. SystemsX.ch, the Swiss Initiative in Systems Biology has merged the strength of ETH Zurich, EPF Lausanne and the Universities of Basel, Berne, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich. The SystemsX.ch Call for Proposal has been published
Zurich. 10.09.07. AK. The call for proposals has been published with the launching of SystemsX.ch at the Kick-off meeting of September 06, 2007. Scientists can submit calls for RTD, IPhD and IPP Projects until January 01, 2008.
SystemsX.ch is about to be launched

The Board of Directors will meet subsequently to the CRUS meeting to sign the SystemsX.ch contract. SystemsX.ch, the Swiss Initiative in Systems Biology will merge the strength of ETH Zurich, EPF Lausanne and the Universities of Basel, Berne, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich. SystemsX.ch Scientific Executive Board completed
Zurich. 06.07.07. AK. On friday, July 06, 2007, the Board of Directors elected five additional scientists for the SystemsX.ch Scientific Executive Board. The Board now constists of Ruedi Aebersold (Chair), Ron Appel, Konrad Basler, Denis Duboule, Susan Gasser, Vassily Hatzimanikatis, Laurent Keller, Luke Lee, Wolfgang Meier, Demetri Psaltis, Walter Senn, Amalio Telenti and Peter Widmayer.
More funds for research and education
Zurich. 20.06.2007. AK. On Tuesday, the Ständerat, the upper chamber of the Swiss Parliament was debating the federal budget for education, research and innovation for 2008 - 2011, some 21,2 Billion CHF. The Ständerat decided to increase the funds for research and education in 2008 - 2011 annually by 6% respective to the level of 2007. However, the motion of Fritz Schiesser, demanding a law which excluedes all science relevant federal credits from subsequent cuttings for the period of 2008 - 2011 was rejected. All-SystemsX.ch-Day on September 17, 2007
Zurich. 19.06.2007. AK. On September 17, 2007, an All-SystemsX.ch-Day will take place at EPF Lausanne. Aim of the event is the presentation of ongoing research at SystemsX projects and workshops to prepare the submission of proposals. More information can be found here.
Newly elected Scientific Executive Board
Zurich. 04.06.07. AK. In their conference of May 30, 2007, the future SystemsX.ch Board of Directors elected a core group of eight systems biology scientists into the SystemsX.ch Scientific Executive Board, namely Ruedi Aebersold (Chair), Ron Appel, Vassily Hatzimanikatis, Luke Lee, Walter Senn, Wolfgang Meier, Amalio Telenti and Konrad Basler. In a second round, four further scientists will be elected.
New Glue Projects and Scientific Nodes approved
Zurich. 16.04.2007. AK. Last week, the Partners Meeting of SystemsX fully approved two Glue Projects and a Scientific Node. They are namely GP-CISD, Center for Information Sciences and Databases; GP-BSF, the Biomolecular Screening Facility of EPFL as well as SN-CPHD, Center for Cell Plasticity and Stem Cell Biology in Health and Disease. 200 Million Swiss Francs for Swiss Systems Biology
Bern. 24.1.2007. thm. The Swiss federal council proposes to the federal parliament to devote 200 Million Swiss Francs to the advancement of systems biology during the years 2008-2011. 100 Million CHF shall go to SystemsX, the Swiss initiative in Systems Biology. Another 100 Million CHF are reserved for the Department of Biosystems Science & Engineering of ETH Zurich in Basel, writes the Swiss government in his Federal Message on Education, Research and Innovation for the years 2008-2011. The total sum planned to be spent in the framework of SystemsX in the years 2008-2011 by federal and cantonal universities and industry is about 460 Million CHF. SystemsX, which will evolve into SystemsX.ch from 2008, is hailed in the message as «substantial contribution to the advancement of innovation and to the enhancement of the work and research place Switzerland».
